It enhances the company’s current intellectual property by utilising various technologies for developing, executing, and evaluating “patient-specific” surgical protocols.

Although the patent focuses on knee surgery, the technology is adaptable for all joints, including partial or total joint replacements.

Exactech’s Newton Knee technique, powered by “Active Intelligence”, claims to integrate with the global positioning system (GPS) to provide pre-resection insights, soft tissue analytics, as well as tailored planning for “balanced” total joint replacement surgery.

This latest development bolsters the company’s nearly 50-patent portfolio aimed at soft tissue management advancements.

Exactech Advanced Surgical Technologies Development senior vice-president Laurent Angibaud said: “This patent represents a major milestone in our mission to revolutionise surgical planning through data-driven technologies.

“Newton empowers surgeons by seamlessly integrating anatomical landmarks, dynamic joint alignment and laxity acquisitions, and real-time adjustments. This advanced technology is poised to make a significant impact by expanding its abilities to deliver personalised, patient-specific planning across all joints.”

In April last year, the company announced the receipt of USPTO Patents #11,944,365 and #11,950,820, bolstering its intellectual property protection for its Newton soft tissue balancing technology used in total knee replacement surgery.

The company’s Newton protocol delivers soft tissue analytics for “predictive postoperative stability” along with real-time quantifiable data aiding in executing patient-specific plans with GPS assistance.

Exactech aims to equip orthopaedic surgeons with surgical instruments, implants, and the Active Intelligence ecosystem comprising smart solutions to enhance patient mobility.
