Royal Philips has acquired Dutch digital health scale-up company NightBalance, which specialises in developing medical devices for the treatment of sleep disorders.

The deal adds NightBalance’s Sleep Position Trainer (SPT) device to Philips’ Sleep and Respiratory Care portfolio. SPT addresses positional obstructive sleep apnoea and snoring.

The device gently prompts patients to avoid sleeping on their back, thereby preventing the occurrence of apnoeas during sleep. It secured the European CE-Mark and is available in certain countries.

Royal Philips Sleep and Respiratory Care business leader John Frank said: “NightBalance offers a unique, patient friendly solution to treat positional obstructive sleep apnoea and positional snoring that is highly complementary to our current offerings.

“This acquisition will help us further expand our leadership position in the growing home care market, and our ability to deliver integrated solutions that drive efficiencies and improved outcomes.”

Currently, Philips offers a variety of care solutions for people suffering from obstructive sleep apnoea such as DreamWear range of advanced mask designs, a CPAP therapy system DreamStation and DreamMapper application designed to aid sleep therapy and compliance for patients.
