It is intended to provide detailed images of the heart’s structure and function, as well as tissue composition.

The tool is equipped to help in diagnosing and treating a wide range of heart conditions including myocarditis, heart failure and cardiomyopathies, infiltrative disease, congenital heart disease, cardiac masses, valvular heart disease, pericardial diseases, and other pathologies.

Furthermore, the device can be used to monitor patient progress and therapy response over time.

MarinHealth Medical Center CEO David Klein said: “The addition of cardiac MRI showcases our dedication to ensuring our physicians and patients have access to the best possible technology available so we can continue to provide the best possible patient outcomes.”

The Haynes Cardiovascular Institute at MarinHealth now offers the MRI tool to provide a full spectrum of cardiac imaging services.

The addition of cardiac MRI is expected to complement Haynes’ existing services such as cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA), transesophageal echocardiography, rest and stress transthoracic echocardiography, electrocardiography (EKG), heart monitors, myocardial perfusion imaging, among others.

Through the generosity of donors, Haynes raised $220,000 of the estimated $400,000 required to acquire cardiac MRI technology for MarinHealth.

Haynes Cardiovascular Institute cardiologist Dr Pankaj Malhotra said: “In a short amount of time, we can assess cardiac function, learn about tissue composition, quantify blood flow, and gather vital diagnostic and prognostic data for patients.

“Others have described cardiac MRI as the closest we currently are to taking the heart of the body, examining it, and putting it back in its place.”
