Omron Healthcare, the medical-device arm of Japan’s Omron, has commenced full-scale blood pressure monitor production at its first Indian manufacturing facility, situated near Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

The subsidiary running the plant, Omron Healthcare Manufacturing India, was incorporated in July 2022. Mass production at the site got underway last month.

The 24,000m² factory operates five dedicated production lines making monitors for Indian consumers. Quality-control standards and manufacturing knowledge have been transferred from Omron’s long-established Matsusaka plant in Japan and its facility in Vietnam.

The Chennai operation forms part of a broader effort to reduce the company’s concentration of output in Vietnam and spread supply-chain risk across multiple geographies.

Omron Healthcare president and CEO Ayumu Okada told Reuters that India could ultimately rank among the company’s largest manufacturing bases.

Omron intends to scale the factory’s production capacity tenfold by 2028. Reuters reported that the company is aiming for annual output of approximately three million units by that date, with the potential to reach around 3.5 million units if the plant runs three shifts.

The site is also expected to serve European markets over time, supplementing existing Vietnamese supply, according to Reuters.

The initial product range comprises the HEM-7090, HEM-7181 and HEM-7183T series. These span straightforward devices aimed at first-time users through to models equipped with a trend-indicator function that flags rising readings and Bluetooth pairing with the Omron Connect health-management app.

Despite the move to local manufacturing, Okada told Reuters that producing in India would not reduce retail prices.

Looking further ahead, Omron said it may add nebuliser production for respiratory conditions such as asthma at the Chennai site. The factory also aligns with the Indian Government’s Make in India programme through local sourcing and workforce development.

The planned capacity expansion, future European exports and additional product categories remain forward-looking objectives whose timing will depend on market demand and operational execution.
