Siemens Healthineers is set to debut its two Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based software assistants for MRI, AI-Rad Companion Brain MR for Morphometry Analysis and AI-Rad Companion Prostate MR for Biopsy Support at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA 2019) conference, Chicago.

The two AI-based assistants are designed to ease the burden of routine activities for radiologists while performing MRI examinations of brain and prostate.

The AI-Rad Companion Brain MR for Morphometry Analysis performs automatic segmentation of MRI images of the brain and measures brain volume. Shrinkage in the brain volume indicates diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s and other dementia diseases.

The device measures the volume of grey matter (nerve cells), white matter (nerve cell connections) and cerebrospinal fluid in various segments of the brain and compares the results to traditional values.

The analysis is based on AI algorithms and can automatically identify nearly 50 brain segments on MRI images.

The software assistant then measures the volume in various segments of the brain and compares the results to data in a normative reference database for brain morphometric, made available by the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).

It then feeds the results into a report and automatically marks volume deviations, enabling neurologists to offer objective, quantitative data to their neurological department.

Siemens Healthineers digital health head Peter Koerte said: “With the new AI-based assistants, we are expanding our diagnostic offering to help our customers increase efficiency and improve the quality of care.

“We firmly believe that AI will help physicians deal with their workload and benefit patients by helping achieve an improved, patient-focused decision-making process.”

AI-Rad Companion Prostate MR for Biopsy Support automatically segments the outer contour of the prostate on MRI images and enables radiologists to mark the areas suspected to have lesions. The radiologists can then handover the MRI images to urologists for fusion with ultrasound images during biopsies.

Such targeted MRI-supported biopsies cut down the time required for this routine activity and make it easier for urologists to detect significant prostate carcinomas.

Meanwhile, Siemens Healthineers will also introduce its mobile head CT scanner, Somatom On.site at RSNA 2019.
