Varian Medical Systems (VAR) has secured 510(k) clearance from US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its VitalBeam platform that was developed to provide advanced radiotherapy.
The company also received CE Mark approval for the VitalBeam platform, which was first acquired by Chirayu Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) in Bhopal, India.

Apart from the CMCH in India, treatment centres in the US and Europe have ordered the VitalBeam platform.
CMCH owner Dr Ajay Goenka said: "We are looking to increase the capacity in our region for helping cancer patients with the most advanced treatments possible, and we are making efforts to provide patients with the best available treatments in the world.
"We chose VitalBeam because we wanted something with the advantages of the TrueBeam platform that would enable us to go beyond basic intensity modulated radiotherapy."
The VitalBeam platform is said to integrate Varian’s multiple innovations to improve the precision, safety and speed of treatment on its TrueBeam radiotherapy system.

By GlobalDataCMCH physician Dr TP Sahoo said: "The VitalBeam system will enable us to complete image-guided treatments quickly, in as little as two to four minutes when using advanced capabilities like RapidArc, and to shape the radiation dose very precisely."
Dr Sahoo noted the clinical team at the hospital will use the VitalBeam system to treat patients with tumours in vital locations where toxicity to healthy tissues must be minimised.
Varian Oncology Systems business president Kolleen Kennedy said: "Our goal, with this platform, was to help increase access to quality cancer care around the world.
"We are gratified to work with institutions like the Chirayu Medical College in bringing advanced, image-guided radiotherapy to more cancer patients."
Varian offers comprehensive solutions for radiotherapy, radiosurgery, proton therapy and brachytherapy, as well as informatics software for managing comprehensive cancer clinics, radiotherapy centres and medical oncology practices.
The company also supplies x-ray imaging components, including tubes, digital detectors, and image processing software and workstations for use in medical, scientific, and industrial settings, as well as for security and non-destructive testing.
