It also displays ECG rhythms and detects the presence of atrial fibrillation (AF) when prescribed or used under the care of a physician.

The monitor can be used by healthcare professionals, patients with known or suspected heart conditions and health conscious individuals.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared ECG monitor was designed in collaboration with global design firm IDEO, based on first-hand customer feedback.

AF affects more than 140 million people worldwide and the company is focused on helping those with diagnosed and undiagnosed heart conditions, by providing patients and caregivers a tool to detect and manage heart conditions.

Users of AliveCor’s Heart Monitor are recording 130,000 ECGs per month and actively tracks more than 10,000 symptoms, medications and activities that may affect an individual’s wellbeing.

University of California San Francisco heart and vascular centre cardiology division co-director Jeffrey Olgin said: "The AliveCor Heart Monitor leads to results that I can use to manage my patients remotely, a trend that is here to stay.

"The Heart Monitor is designed to record, store and transfer single-channel electrocardiography (ECG) rhythms."

"Seeing my patients’ ECG results in real-time is the next best thing to having them in my office when the event takes place."

The new heart monitor is compatible with the free AliveECG app and will be available through AliveCor’s collaboration with Omron Healthcare, a manufacturer of home blood pressure monitors.

AliveCor president Euan Thomson said: "Big data and personalised medicine are revolutionising the delivery of care and have the potential to disrupt the way we think about healthcare.

"The newest generation of the Heart Monitor confirms AliveCor’s ongoing commitment to help stop the unnecessary loss of life and healthcare costs driven by undiagnosed and under-managed heart arrhythmias that lead to potentially life-threatening conditions like strokes."

The company said the new mobile ECG device is available for $74.99 and is not intended for paediatric use. In January 2015, the monitor will also be available on Amazon.
