On June 5, the United Nations World Environment Day was celebrated across the globe. Sandvik strives to minimise its environmental footprint and puts a lot of effort into making its offerings and production better from a sustainability perspective.
Beat Air Pollution was the theme for this year’s World Environment Day. Within Sandvik, there are several examples of actions, activities and innovations that help to reduce emissions and prevent air pollution.
Sandvik’s 2030 sustainability target of reducing CO2 emissions will also indirectly reduce air pollution. This will be achieved mainly by using more energy that is produced in ways which means lower emissions to air, not only CO2.
A few examples of actions to reduce air pollution are presented below:
Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology
In Tychy, Poland, a new treatment plant for a paint shop is being installed. Besides improved effectiveness, the equipment also separates volatile organic compounds from the emitted air. At the site, solar cells have been installed to provide low emission electricity to the site.
Our battery-driven underground equipment helps to address the potential impacts of diesel particulates and other underground engine emissions with the launch of, for example, the Sandvik DD422iE automated drill rig.
Sandvik Materials Technology
At the steel production site in Sandviken, Sweden a project is running to change fuel from oil and liquid petroleum gas into biogas and natural gas, for heating furnaces. This will reduce the use of fossil fuels and also reduce emissions to air from the production of fuels.
Sandvik Machining Solutions
District heating is installed at the large site in Gimo, Sweden, for heating of the buildings. The new system replaces a system with oil heating and reduces emissions to air. In addition, a culvert has recently been built from the central boiler to both factories which makes it possible to transfer excess heat from one factory to the other.
Solar cells for production of low emission electricity are installed at two sites in Pune, India and a similar system is being installed at a third site in Chiplun, India. This helps to reduce emissions to air from the production of electricity.
