In 2021, GlobalData’s Market Model methodology determined that the leading player in the positive airway pressure device market in India was Philips Respironics followed by ResMed, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Vyaire Medical, Teijin, Breas Medical, Koike Medical and DeVilbiss Healthcare.

PAP ventilation can also be used during the “weaning off” period of a ventilated intensive care patient, in exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), pulmonary edema and other settings of respiratory failure. PAP machines keep pressured air flowing through the airways of the throat. The patient wears a face mask which is attached to a tube and a machine that blows the pressurized air through mask into the airway and this air acts like a balloon keeping the windpipe open during sleep. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices, Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BPAP) devices, Automatic self-adjusting Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) devices are covered under this segment. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure devices provide a gentle and unobstructed breathing by delivering a steady constant pressure of air through a hose which is connected to a nasal mask, nasal pillow or a full face mask. The mask must be carefully secured to the face so that no air escapes. This constant supply of air pressure into the throat does not allow air to collapse during inhalation while sleeping. This device consists of a flow generator which provides the airflow; Interface (nasal or full face mask, nasal pillows, or less commonly a lip-seal mouthpiece) provides the connection to the user’s airway, and hose connects the flow generator to the interface. BPAP can also be set with breath timing feature; it will measure the amount of breath a person should be taking. The process is done in two levels IPAP (Inspiratory Positive Airway Pressure) which delivers high level of pressurized air as the patients inhale. EPAP (Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure) delivers a low level of air during exhalation. If the time between the breaths exceeds the time limit then the devices will force the patient to breath temporarily by increasing the air pressure. BPAP mostly helpful for cardiopulmonary disorders. There will be a constant amount of pressurized air that passes through the hose into the patient mask and the pressurized air opens the patient’s airway and eliminating the obstructed airway caused by apneas. APAP is an auto CPAP designed with a low pressure setting and a high pressure setting, which provides fluctuating air pressure basing on the patients sleeping position, stage of sleep and the respiratory events.

Following the widespread disruption resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic to the broader medical devices market during 2020 and 2021, the value of the positive airway pressure device devices market within India was expected to be over $100m in 2021.
