SeaSpine Holdings has been granted a patent for a device that serves as a stiff guide wire for surgical procedures. The device includes a tube with an internal channel and a central rod that slides within the tube. The tube has longitudinally slotted strips that can be deflected outward to form an anchoring configuration. The device also includes a detachable actuator that allows for over-the-wire deployment of a tool or implant. A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11751928B2) describes a device and method for performing surgical procedures on target tissue in the body of a patient. The device consists of a tube with an internal channel and a central rod deployed within the channel. The distal end of the tube is interconnected with the distal end of the central rod. The tube has a longitudinally slotted region that forms deflectable strips. When the tube is advanced relative to the central rod, the deflectable strips outwardly deflect to form an anchoring configuration. This allows the device to anchor in the target tissue. The central rod and tube together define a stiff guide wire.

The device includes a detachable actuator that can be engaged with the proximal portion of the tube and the central rod. The actuator responds to a manually applied force to advance the tube relative to the central rod. It can be detached from the guide wire, making the guide wire accessible for over-the-wire deployment of a tool or implant.

The external diameter of the guide wire is in the range of 1-3 millimeters. The deflectable strips deflect outwards to span at least 2.5 times the external diameter of the tube. Each deflectable strip is formed with a thinned deflection region between a proximal and distal portion, generating bending and forming an acute angle between the two portions. The bending of the deflectable strips occurs as a plastic deformation.

The device can be used in a system with at least one surgical tool that has a bore for over-the-wire deployment. The device is sized to allow the surgical tool to advance over the wire while passing through the bore.

The method for performing a surgical procedure using the device involves creating an access opening through external tissue, positioning the guide wire in the target tissue, anchoring the guide wire by advancing the tube and deflecting the strips, introducing a tool or implant along the guide wire, retracting the tube to release the anchoring, removing the guide wire, and closing the access opening.

Overall, this patented device and method provide a means for securely anchoring a guide wire in target tissue during surgical procedures, allowing for precise and controlled deployment of tools or implants.
