Venus Medtech Hangzhou has been granted a patent for a sheath used for delivering interventional instruments. The sheath has a multi-layer structure, including an inner sheath, inner lining tube, metal tube, and outer wrapping membrane. The distal end structure of the sheath includes a tubular body section with elastic expansion pieces arranged circumferentially. The expansion pieces can assume a converged configuration or a flared configuration, with a connecting strip between them. The patent also describes the specific configuration of the connecting strip in the converged configuration. A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11759343B2) describes a sheath for delivering an interventional instrument. The sheath has a multi-layer structure and comprises an inner sheath, an inner lining tube, a metal tube, and an outer wrapping membrane. The metal tube surrounds the inner sheath and the inner lining tube and consists of a head tube, a main tube, and an extension tube. The sheath also includes a distal end structure in the form of a tubular body section with elastic expansion pieces arranged circumferentially at the distal side. These expansion pieces can assume a converged configuration and a flared configuration, with connecting strips provided between them. The connecting strips are folded and received in the converged configuration and unfolded in the flared configuration. The distal end structure of the head tube also includes protrusions on the outside of the corner portions of the U-shaped structure.

The patent also discloses that the sheath's metal tube can be formed as one piece or as separate pieces connected end-to-end. The connecting strips extend continuously in a circumferential direction of the body section and can be formed as one piece with the body section, expansion pieces, and connecting strips. The distal end structure of the head tube can be formed by cutting a tube with a shape memory property. The body section of the distal end structure has hollow areas on its side wall, and a connector is provided on the proximal side. The hollow areas can be through holes arranged randomly or in an array on the peripheral surface. The distal lateral edge of each expansion piece has an arc shape, and the connecting strips extend along a tangential direction of the arc and are connected to the distal lateral edge. In the flared configuration, the protrusions of the U-shaped structure can be adjacent to or abut against each other.

The patent further describes an opening between two adjacent expansion pieces, with the corresponding connecting strip extending into the opening along an arc-shaped path. The opening is widened in the middle portion and narrowed at the ends in the axial direction of the metal tube. Each expansion piece can have at least one hollow area, and the number of expansion pieces ranges from 3 to 6. The total area of the hollow area on the same expansion piece is less than 50% of the area of the expansion piece. The hollow area can consist of through holes arranged axially or circumferentially in intervals.

Overall, this patent presents a sheath design for delivering an interventional instrument that incorporates a multi-layer structure and a unique distal end structure with elastic expansion pieces and connecting strips. The design allows for flexibility and ease of use during medical procedures.
