Q3 2021 saw a flat growth in COVID-19 medical device approvals

The number of COVID-19 indicated medical devices gaining approval in Q3 2021 saw a flat growth when compared with Q2 2021, according to GlobalData’s medical devices marketed products database

Compared with Q3 2020, the number of COVID-19 indicated medical devices gaining approval in Q3 2021 saw a 58% drop globally.

Europe tops COVID-19 approved medical devices activity

Comparing COVID-19 medical device approvals activity in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position for approved products (55%) in Q3 2021, followed by North America (24%), and Asia-Pacific (20%).

On a country level, the Germany had the most COVID-19 approved medical devices during the quarter, representing the largest share (50%) of the global market. In second place was United States with a share of 20%, followed by Australia with 8%.

COVID-19 marketed medical devices: Development activity in Q3 2021

GlobalData’s database indicated that CE-IVD marketed medical devices that addressed the COVID-19 pandemic accounted for 32% of medical devices in Q3 2021, compared with 32% in Q2 2021.

COVID-19 medical devices obtaining EUA approval declined to 42% in Q3 2021, compared with Q2 2021.

EUA have become more common during the COVID-19 pandemic, as an expeditious mechanism to bring therapeutic devices to market more quickly than normal device approvals.

Company-developed COVID-19 medical devices lead in Q3 2021

GlobalData’s databases indicated that company-developed medical devices accounted for a 97% share of approved COVID-19 devices globally during Q3 2021, while institute-developed marketed products held the remaining share.

The quarterly average for Q3 2021 saw 97% of approved COVID-19 indicated devices originating from private and public companies, and 3% from institutes.
