Swedish medical devices and solutions supplier Arjo has signed a deal to acquire an equity stake in Bruin Biometrics (BBI), a US-based firm specialising in biometric sensor technology.

Financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed.

As part of the deal, Arjo is an exclusive distributor for BBI’s pressure ulcer assessment device, dubbed SEM Scanner.

BBI has been developing biometric sensor technology for the early diagnosis and monitoring of chronic and preventable diseases in partnership with clinicians.

Arjo president and CEO Joacim Lindoff said: “The BBI technology is well aligned with our strategy and will help us strengthen our offering of outcome-based solutions. By combining our extensive knowledge and sales network with BBI’s technology, we will help drive a shift in pressure injury management towards prevention and ultimately better clinical and financial outcomes.

“This investment means we will gain further access to the wound care market, where we see substantial growth potential.”

BBI CEO Martin Burns added: “Pressure injury incidence can and should be reduced. Arjo’s knowledge, expertise and scale will enable many patients and their families, providers, and payors to benefit from this solution worldwide.”

BBI’s wireless Provizio SEM Scanner enables fast and easy pressure injury / ulcer risk assessments, claimed to be the only SEM Scanner that functions as an adjunct to routine clinical skin assessment on the sacrum and heels.

According to a report by NHS, between 1,700-2,000 patients in the UK develop a pressure injury or ulcer every month. The treatment for pressure ulcers allegedly costs the NHS more than £3.8m per month.
