Ascensia Diabetes Care has entered into a commercial and financing agreement with UK-based medical technology developer Sava Technologies to distribute its wearable glucose microsensor.
Under the deal, Ascensia has secured exclusive distribution rights, beginning in Europe, and has made a strategic equity investment by leading Sava’s Series B funding round.

Sava plans to conduct a pivotal clinical study for the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology this year.
Sava aims to secure CE approval and release the device within 18 to 24 months for non-adjunctive use, allowing insulin dosing without routine confirmatory tests.
Distribution will take place through retail avenues and established reimbursement pathways, mirroring Ascensia’s primary blood glucose monitoring distribution network.
The wearable platform tracks subcutaneous molecules and biomarkers in real time, beginning with glucose.
Sava’s microsensor uses a minimally invasive method compared to existing continuous glucose monitors, with the capacity to provide broader physiological data.
The technology is also intended to support wider health and disease monitoring beyond glucose over the longer term.
Ascensia CEO Peter Bodlund said: “Microsensors have the potential to transform the day-to-day monitoring experience for people with diabetes.
“By bringing together Sava’s innovative technology with Ascensia’s deep diabetes expertise, strong reputation and commercial capabilities, we have an exciting opportunity to address important unmet needs in diabetes care.
“This is an exciting step for Ascensia as we continue to broaden our portfolio and pursue our ambition to simplify and improve life for people with diabetes.”
The collaboration includes a strategic equity investment by Ascensia, which was established in 2016 when Tokyo-listed PHC Holdings acquired Bayer Diabetes Care.
Ascensia sells its Contour portfolio across over 90 countries and maintains direct commercial operations in 29 countries.
Its parent organisation, PHC Group, operates healthcare solutions, life sciences, and diagnostics businesses through subsidiaries including Ascensia Diabetes Care, Epredia, LSI Medience Corporation, Mediford, PHC Corporation, and Wemex.
In September 2024, Senseonics and Ascensia Diabetes Care have announced receipt of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the Eversense 365 CGM system for individuals aged 18 and over with type I and type II diabetes.
