Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) has launched the Elyra thulium fiber laser (TFL) system in the US, expanding its offerings for kidney stone care and urologic procedures.

The platform utilises TFL technology to support various procedures, including stone lithotripsy and soft tissue interventions, aiming to address key requirements in clinical urology practices.

The system is available in two versions, Elyra and Elyra Plus, which allow urology teams to choose the configuration most suitable for their operational protocols.

Its air-cooled design and smaller size target operational challenges presented by traditional laser systems.

BD has incorporated features such as a user-friendly interface, fast startup sequence, customisable settings, and an optional wireless footswitch.

The company completed initial clinical procedures with the Elyra Plus TFL system at a medical centre, where urologists and technicians noted the system’s accessible interface and integrated safety functions.

According to the company, these features contributed to operational ease during procedures.

BD urology and critical care worldwide president Mike Cusack said: “Elyra demonstrates how BD innovates with speed and purpose, introducing technology that helps clinicians deliver high-quality care more efficiently.

“By pairing advanced TFL technology with a clinician-focused design, Elyra streamlines kidney stone care and supports greater adaptability across diverse procedural needs.”

BD reports that the new platform has been developed to allow further advancements, enabling responsiveness to new clinical and patient requirements.

The Elyra lineup supports BD’s approach to stone management by coordinating with products for access, dilation, visualisation, fragmentation, removal, and drainage in urology.

Earlier this month, BD and Wellstar Health System formed a partnership to enhance the safety and efficiency of medication delivery throughout Wellstar’s hospitals and care facilities.

The agreement focuses on utilising connected medication management systems, with Wellstar integrating BD Pyxis Pro medication dispensing technologies and BD Alaris Infusion Systems to create streamlined processes from pharmacies to the bedside.
