Litovue

US-based medical device manufacturer Boston Scientific has launched the LithoVue single-use digital flexible ureteroscope in the US and Europe.

The LithoVue system is designed to carry out minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to diagnose and treat stones and other conditions of the kidney, ureter and bladder.

The system offers a single-use flexible ureteroscope for urologists, and is designed to address the inconsistent performance, operational challenges and costs associated with widely used reusable scopes that require maintenance, sterilisation and reprocessing.

The company said that the new system will provide improved digital visualisation and navigation for consistent clinical performance during each patient procedure.

With a digital CMOS imager in the 7.7F tip, LithoVue captures quality images across a depth of field compared with other commonly used reusable scopes.

Duke University Comprehensive Kidney Stone Urologic Surgery Center professor and director Glenn Preminger said: “Flexible ureteroscopy is considered the gold standard for treating many stones in the ureter and kidney, and the LithoVue System provides high-quality visualisation that is comparable to or better than the leading digital reusable ureteroscopes.

“We believe that the LithoVue System offers a safe, effective and affordable solution that helps to avoid many of the hassles and unpredictable challenges of reusable ureteroscopes, without compromising visualisation or manoeuvrability.”

The system’s full 270° scope deflection in both directions is said to offer accurate navigation toward the targeted treatment area.

It also features workstation monitor with integrated image processing software on a compact and rolling mobile cart, which can be used alone during an ureteroscopic procedure or connected to existing monitors and integrated video systems in the operating room suite.

Boston Scientific urology and pelvic health president and senior vice-president Karen Prange said: “At Boston Scientific, we are committed to providing innovative solutions to the healthcare challenges that our customers face every day.

“The LithoVue System is an example of how we are focused on addressing unmet needs by providing urologists and hospitals a predictable, cost-effective, minimally invasive endoscope for the management of kidney stones.”

The LithoVue system is also commercially available in New Zealand.
