Irish medical device company Covidien has announced the launch of its Symbotex composite mesh in the US for surgical laparoscopic and open ventral hernia repair.
Symbotex composite mesh is intended for the reinforcement of soft tissue where a weakness exists such as the repair of the primary abdominal wall and incisional hernias.
The new hernia repair product features a macroporous monofilament, hydrophilic textile in a three-dimensional construction that allows for reinforced strength, memory shape and significant tissue ingrowth.
It includes a bioabsorbable collagen film on the visceral side which minimises tissue attachments.
Orientation marker in the product facilitates correctly placing the mesh over the hernia defect. According to Covidien, this product allows surgeons to perform surgical laparoscopic and open ventral hernia repairs in an easier way.
The Symbotex mesh is transparent and offers improvements to the visualisation of the anatomy during mesh placement and fixation.
It is available in a large variety of shapes and sizes for laparoscopic hernia repair, with specific subranges dedicated to laparoscopic and open surgery.
Covidien hernia care vice-president and general manager Rob Claypoole said: "Through ongoing collaboration with our customers we know there is a need for a mesh that is easy to use and provides optimal repair for patients and we believe Symbotex provides the best of both worlds.
"With the addition of Symbotex, our hernia product line offers surgeons an even broader choice of unique solutions to address diverse patient needs."
Covidien obtained 510(k) approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for the Symbotex composite mesh in August 2013.
Covidien has announced the US launch of the new product at the American Hernia Society’s 16th Annual Hernia Repair meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, from 13 March to 15 March.
In addition to Symbotex composite mesh, the company is demonstrating the latest innovations to its portfolio of hernia repair products, which includes AccuMesh positioning system and ProGrip laparoscopic self-fixating mesh.
