ANSiStim

US-based medical device maker, DyAnsys has launched a new and effective non-narcotic solution for the treatment of people suffering from long-term chronic pain.

Available in select doctors’ offices and pain management centres, the four-piece system is centred on the ANSiStim, a small device worn behind the ear to administer continuous pulses of low-level electrical current to nerve endings in the ear.

The pulses travel through the nerve tracks into the central lobe of the brain causing the release of endorphins, the body’s natural opiates that travel through the blood tream inhibiting pain across the body.

DyAnsys CEO Srini Nageshwar said: "This is a breakthrough alternative for patients who have not been able to find relief from long-term pain.

"The pulses travel through the nerve tracks into the central lobe of the brain causing the release of endorphins, the body’s natural opiates that travel through the blood tream inhibiting pain across the body."

"Pain, especially pain that has no discernible cause, can interfere with all aspects of a person’s life. This provides a comprehensive, non-narcotic treatment solution."

The device features a hand-held ANSiScope with a built-in display screen and functions that can be viewed on an external monitor, to take measurements that are automatically captured on the device as an electronic patient record.

In addition, the patient’s vital signs and other information can be manually added to create an easily transferable integrated record.

Electrodes placement is determined by the ANSiStim Locator, which finds the best aural stimulation points based on where the patient has had pain, while an ANSiStim Tester assures physicians and patients that the ANSiStim is working correctly.

ANSiStim placement takes ten minutes and patients continually wear the light, unobtrusive device for four days while they go about their activities.

The healthcare provider will apply a new ANSiStim every week and the total treatment will typically last for ten to 12 weeks.

Montvale Health Associates medical director Rick Lambert said: "This is an important option for patients who have been struggling with pain, and who either don’t want to take medication or have not responded to it.

"The ANSiStim is easy for patients to use and there are no negative effects."
