US-based specialty healthcare company Merz has acquired medical device company ON Light Sciences for an undisclosed amount.
The acquisition has expanded the aesthetic portfolio of Merz which will be supplemented by ON Light Sciences developed DeScribe Transparent PFD (perfluorodecalin) patch used to remove laser tattoo.
Merz Pharma Group CEO Philip Burchard said: “The addition of ON Light Sciences’ innovative technology allows us to better meet the needs of aesthetic practices that focus on energy-based devices.
“We have a vision to be the most innovative company in aesthetics, and this acquisition clearly complements our growing and diversified global portfolio, which includes the Ultherapy and Cellfina devices.”
The DeScribe Transparent PFD Patch is placed over tattoos before exposing it to irradiation, enabling physicians for a more efficient treatment of tattoos through rapid multiple laser passes in a single treatment session.
It also offers optical clearing of tissue without damaging the epidermis and preventing potentially infectious backsplatter and fumes.
In a recently held clinical trial, the DeScribe Transparent PFD Patch laser tattoo removal demonstrated faster healing post-treatment while ensuring comfort of the patients.
Tattoo removal is projected as one of the fastest-growing laser procedures witnessing a rise of 74% since 2012 prompted by the development of new medical device technologies related to the area which has encouraged more individuals to consider removing tattoos.
Merz advised the existing ON Light Sciences customers to continue to subscribe to the company’s products through ON Light Sciences’ website.
