Sonitus Medical unveiled its SoundBite hearing system, a non-surgical and removable hearing prosthetic to treat single-sided deafness and conductive hearing loss.
SoundBite is comprised of two components, an easy to insert in-the-mouth hearing device that fits around the teeth and a small microphone unit that fits behind the ear.
It works by the bone conduction principle, wherein the microphone unit picks sound waves from the outer ear where it is digitally processed and sent to the in-the-mouth device, where they are converted to imperceptible sound vibrations.
The US Food Drug and Administration (FDA) cleared SoundBite to treat single-sided deafness in January 2011.
Approval for the treatment of conductive hearing loss followed in July 2011.
