SimonMed Imaging, an outpatient imaging provider, based in the US, has completed the implementation of its third-generation breast artificial intelligence (AI) program with ProFound AI 3.0 from iCAD. The FDA-approved software increases sensitivity to detect breast cancer on 3D mammograms.

According to SimonMed, the ProFound AI 3.0 algorithm can analyse individual images and identify potentially malignant lesions. The software was developed using over five million images from 30,000 cases, including almost 8,000 biopsy-proven cancers, and validated on approximately one million images from 3,500 cases that included 1,200 biopsy-proven cancers.

Dr John Simon, CEO of SimonMed said: “We have been a leader in adopting AI as well as 3D mammography and 3D breast ultrasound to use technology to better detect early breast cancer. Published studies as well as our own internal research has demonstrated that iCAD ProFound AI significantly improves early cancer detection. We are now on our third generation and the technology just gets better so we now have better more sensitive AI and results in seconds.”

“Our commitment is bringing better technology to patients, and this means that we do not charge extra for it, unlike other providers that are asking patients to pay $60 or more. We know that many patients cannot afford this added expense and want all our patients to benefit from this lifesaving technology.”

SimonMed has partnered with iCAD through the development of the first, second and third generation of AI imaging in the detection of early breast cancer.

iCAD has previously formed other alliances for the detection of breast cancer using AI. The US-based medical technology firm partnered with researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden in 2019.

AI for breast imaging and the detection of breast cancer is becoming popular. Recently, Koning Corporation debuted its AI-enhanced breast CT imaging software, which produces high-resolution 3D images with reduced noise.

In 2021, a report by GlobalData forecast that the market for AI platforms for the entire healthcare industry will reach $4.3bn by 2024, up from $1.5bn in 2019.
