Canon Medical Systems Corporation is working together with Nagasaki University to use the flourescent LAMP method genetic amplification technique to test for Covid-19.

The new system is able to detect positive cases of Covid-19 in ten minutes, with 100% specificity and a sensitivity of 90% or more. In positive specimens, the testing system can detect 15 or more viral genome copies per reaction within approximately ten minutes. The whole process can be completed in around 40 minutes.

An administrative notification issued by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare means that the rapid genetic testing system has been granted approval for practical application in government-conducted testing. Canon is now evaluating its practical application in public health protection and border control measures at clinical sites, airports and other locations where testing needs to be completed on the same day.
