The UK Government has announced that it plans to roll out two new rapid Covid-19 tests that can detect the presence of the virus in 90 minutes. The tests will be available to the NHS hospitals, care homes and labs and can identify Covid-19 as well as the other winter viruses which includes flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The tests can be administered at non-clinical health settings too.

US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has included OraSure Technologies’ OMNIgene ORAL (OM-505) saliva collection device in the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) awarded to Clinical Reference Laboratory (CRL). CRL is the said to be one of the biggest privately held clinical testing laboratories in the US for Covid-19-causing SARS-CoV-2 testing.

Brain Navi has developed a new robot that can autonomously perform nasal swab tests to avoid cross infections in a bid to save the medical system and re-establish economies. Large-scale testing of Covid-19 is said to be important to restart the economy amid the ongoing pandemic. Brain Navi’s Nasal Swab Robot is expected to test safely patients while safeguarding health care workers from the high-risk environment.

Ginkgo Bioworks has received approximately $40m contract from the NIH‘s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics Advanced Technology Platforms (RADx-ATP) programme to increase its automated technology for SARS-CoV-2. The contract deals with the expansion of operational capacity for large-scale testing in Ginkgo’s facilities.

The FDA has given the authorisation for the first two Covid-19 serology tests that show the estimated quantity of antibodies in the blood.The tests, the ADVIA Centaur COV2G and Atellica’s COV2G, both by Siemens, are called ‘semi-quantitative’ tests that do not provide the precise measurement but an estimation of the antibodies.
