Johnson and Johnson’s DePuy Synthes has unveiled its new minimally invasive surgery (MIS) pedicle screw system, Viper Prime, to improve MIS spinal fusion surgery.

Introduced at the Eurospine 2017 congress held in Dublin, Ireland, Viper Prime is designed to combine multiple instruments into a single tool.

The screw system minimises the number of instruments needed and passed, while it also reduces the number of steps required for insertion of a percutaneous screw using a minimally invasive technique.

According to a bench study, the system was found to decrease the pedicle screw insertion time by 33% when compared with standard MIS methods.

An increased surgical workflow and streamlined instrument set are expected to result in a smaller procedural footprint, reducing waste and processing costs.

DePuy Synthes Spine EMEA lead Jordy Winters said: “The Viper System has more than ten years of clinical heritage and this introduction of Viper Prime is our latest example of how we are providing differentiated technologies that simplify spine surgery, making it more reproducible for every surgeon, while improving patient outcomes.”

The firm has also launched an external circular fixation device called Maxframe Multi-Axial Correction System in the US to gradually correct bone or soft tissue deformities in the arm, leg, foot or ankle.

The Maxframe system features three-dimensional (3D) planning software intended to improve the accuracy of the deformity correction plan using advanced algorithms.

By minimising the number of patient X-rays, the software is expected to reduce overall costs, treatment time, procedural complexity and radiation exposure for the patient and surgeon.

The new Assure Strut Technology of the system allows patients to correctly adjust the struts on the device according to their custom treatment plan.
