Oracle Health has entered a collaboration with Theator to bring AI-powered surgical intelligence solutions to its US customer base.

The partnership aims to automate operative reporting by analysing surgical video footage and integrating findings with electronic health records (EHR).

Theator’s system captures and processes high-definition surgical video using cloud-based technology supported by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).

This approach allows for real-time analysis of procedures, with the system able to identify key surgical steps, monitor for safety milestones, and document clinically significant events as the operation unfolds.

The resulting operative reports are structured and can be made available by the time the surgeon leaves the operating room.

Traditionally, surgeons have generated post-operative reports hours or even days after a procedure, often relying on memory and standard templates.

According to research cited in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, this process achieves an accuracy rate of only 72.8%.

By automating the documentation process, Oracle Health and Theator believe that they may help clinicians capture details more accurately, potentially improving quality, safety, and efficiency within surgical workflows.

Oracle Health and Life Sciences executive vice-president and general manager Seema Verma said: “Clinical documentation has reached almost every setting in medicine, but it has stopped at the door of the operating room.

“By teaming with Theator, we can help surgeons leverage technology that understands what is actually happening during surgery and use AI to streamline the documentation process to reduce cognitive burden.

“This is another example of our commitment to working with a broad ecosystem of companies to achieve meaningful transformation by expanding choice for customers, accelerating adoption of new capabilities, and delivering the connected, scalable technology foundation needed for lasting change.”

Theator’s AI-driven documentation feeds directly into Oracle Health’s EHR system, which allows care teams, reviewers, and billing staff immediate access to detailed surgical records.

In August 2025, Oracle launched a new cloud-based, AI-powered EHR system for ambulatory providers to differentiate from its peers in the US EHR space.
