Sirona Medical has raised $40m, setting the US company up with proceeds to scale its artificial intelligence (AI)-based cloud-native radiology platform into international territories.

The Series D financing round, led by Avidity Partners, with additional participation from VC firms including 8VC, GreatPoint Ventures, means Sirona can now fund its operating plan “indefinitely”, the California-based company stated.

Sirona’s RadOS platform combines picture archiving and communication system (PACS), reporting, diagnostic viewing, worklist, and workflow functions for radiology-related protocols on a single cloud platform and provides users with AI tools for tasks such as radiology report dictation. Since its public launch in November 2023, the company highlighted that RadOS has seen exponential growth, with more than 12 million primary imaging exams conducted with the platform per year.

“Sirona’s mission has always been to accelerate the transition to AI-powered healthcare globally,” said Cameron Andrews, Sirona’s president and founder.

“We pioneered a new category of software in 2018 to accomplish this, and thanks to the confidence of our customers, partners, and investors, Sirona now has the permanent capital necessary to deliver this vision to tens of millions of patients a year and at global scale.”

In meeting Andrews’ outlined aims, Sirona will apply the latest funding tranche to strengthen its platform infrastructure and initiate the launch of Sirona Global by the end of 2026. The company said this initiative will expand its footprint into markets including the UK, Europe, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and more.

CEO Ken Kaufman said: “We look forward to deploying RadOS to more practices, hospitals, health systems, and international markets in 2027.”

AI is having a profound impact in the healthcare industry, not least in the medical imaging space, serving in part as a means to address the well-documented global radiologist shortage. According to GlobalData analysis, the AI market across healthcare is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) around 37% and is expected to reach a $57.4bn valuation in 2029.

A report by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) forecasts that the radiologist shortfall in the US could reach almost 42,000 by 2036. Meanwhile, a 2023 report by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) found that the UK currently has a 30% shortfall in radiologists that is forecast to rise to 40% by 2028.

With the time it takes to train radiologists in the UK and the US, along with growing retirement rates among existing radiologists, this issue does not appear to be going away anytime soon.

Further research by the RCR, published in May 2026, found that the UK National Health Service (NHS) spent £241m ($324.5m) on outsourced radiology reads in 2025, indicative of a 12% increase on 2024 – suggesting a significant appetite for services offered by Sirona and other companies in the space, including Sectra and Intelerad.
