Royal Philips has expanded its portfolio of sleep solutions by launching a new over-the-nose continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask for sleep apnoea patients.

Called DreamWisp, the mask’s facial tube exits the mask to the side, rather than on the front as in traditional devices. This is designed to offer comfort and freedom of movement.

It is estimated that more than 100 million people suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) worldwide. The discomfort caused by wearing CPAP masks is considered as one of the most common challenges for therapy adherence.

Patients that require an over-the-nose mask reportedly cite the front-facing tube as the primary reason for avoiding their sleep apnoea treatment. Royal Philips expects that the DreamWisp’s alternative tube design will address this issue.

“Our focus remains on providing patients with comfortable solutions that help them improve their sleep and overall wellbeing.”

Royal Philips sleep business leader Mark D’Angelo said: “Throughout the world, millions of people suffer from sleep apnea and many of them struggle to adhere to therapy because of mask discomfort.

“Designed with the patient in mind, DreamWisp helps sleep apnoea patients get the rest they deserve with the ability to sleep more comfortably.
