Interventional radiologists, neuroradiologists, and cardiologists will now be able to perform vascular and cardiac interventions on a virtual patient inside the angio-suite.

Siemens Healthineers Interventional Radiology head Dr Michael Scheuering said: “With an ever-increasing complexity of new interventional procedures, our customers strive to acquire and retain procedural skills while optimising their performance and improving patient safety.

“The Artis icono angiography system equipped with a VIST Virtual Patient will make it possible to train new interventional procedures directly in the angio room.”

Using the Artis icono controls, interventionalists will now be able to perform simulated cardiac and vascular procedures to angulate the C-arm, move the angiography table and use the foot pedals.

During this process, actual medical devices will be deployed in a radiation-free environment.

With the help of the integrated solution, clinicians can perform procedures either by using Mentice’s library of patient cases or by importing actual MR and CT patient data for case training and rehearsal.

Additional procedures that are available are transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fractional flow reserve (FFR).

The system ARTIS icono and its features are yet to receive 510(k) clearance and are not yet available in the US commercially.

At present, the VIST Virtual Patient, VIST simulators, and VIST skill acquisition software are commercially available through Mentice across the globe.
