Japan-based Yamaha Motor has launched the cell picking and imaging system Cell Handler to aid the testing process for the pharmaceutical efficiency of various new drugs and anticancer agents in development.
The system enables the one-by-one selection of target cells and their transfer to a microplate with simultaneous high throughput, as well as accurate capture or digitalisation of images.

Cell Handler features the firm’s applied surface mounter ultra high-speed and high-precision pick and place technology, along with new picking and dispensing technology and image processing technology designed to process even small and fragile cells.
With the first unit delivered to Fukushima Medical University in the country, the system is accompanied by a new specialised disposable tip and chamber.
The system is part of the firm’s initiative to enhance and strengthen growth strategies under its three-year new medium-term management plan that commenced last year.
The firm is also working on new services aimed at contributing to various medical fields such as personalised medicine, and the research and development of new drugs.

By GlobalDataYamaha Motor started delivering applications for the medical field in 2010 with a view to advance the use of robotics technologies.
To validate its technologies, the firm has begun joint research with the University of California San Francisco, US, and the Osaka International Cancer Centre in Japan.
It is expected that the firm’s technologies will allow the quick and inexpensive development of high-efficacy therapeutic drugs, minimising medical costs.
