Swedish medical equipment company Elekta has received a medical device licence from Health Canada for its Leksell Gamma Knife Icon radiosurgery system.

Leksell Gamma Knife is the firm's stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) system that aids in location and delivery of radiation dose to targeted brain tissue.

Equipped with the SRS technology, Icon is the sixth generation Leksell Gamma Knife system, developed in collaboration with various neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists.

With flexibility to provide single dose administration or multiple treatment sessions over time, Icon facilitates treatment of very small structures with target sizes ranging from a few millimetres to several centimetres, targets close to critical brain structures and new or recurring brain metastases.

It is expected that new features of Icon such as image guidance will enable treatment of patients who were not candidates for SRS therapy with older technologies.

The new system also includes online Adaptive DoseControl and high-definition motion management technologies to ensure accurate treatments and an efficient workflow.

Icon is found to decrease the delivery of radation to normal brain tissue two to four times, when copmared to other SRS platforms, and also minimises the extracranial dose by up to 130 fold.
