Boston Scientific has purchased the LumenR Tissue Retractor System from LumenR for an undisclosed amount.

The LumenR system has been designed to improve endoscopic sub-mucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) procedures which are less invasive alternatives to conventional surgeries to remove precancerous lesions and malignant tumours in the gastrointestinal tract.

The system improves visualisation of lesions and fosters a stable working environment for tissue retraction and resection conducted during these procedures.

"By bringing this innovative technology forward, we have an opportunity for more physicians to treat patients successfully through less invasive endoscopic procedures."

ESD and EMR procedures are performed as part of endoscopic treatments for colorectal, gastric and esophageal cancers.

The treatment reduces the cost of inpatient stays and avoids adverse events associated with traditional surgery.

Boston Scientific endoscopy senior vice-president and president Art Butcher said: "We are excited about the potential of the LumenR system to improve visibility and control during ESD and EMR procedures and improve quality of life for patients.
