The top five companies accounted for 15% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Align Technology filed the most 3D printing patents within the medical industry in Q3 2023. The company filed 35 3D printing-related patents in the quarter, compared with 15 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Stryker with 9 3D printing patent filings, Johnson & Johnson (6 filings), and Ivoclar Vivadent (6 filings) in Q3 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 42% share of total patent filings
The largest share of 3D printing related patent filings in the medical industry in Q3 2023 was in the US with 42%, followed by China (13%) and Japan (6%). The share represented by the US was 7% higher than the 35% share it accounted for in Q2 2023.
