The global medical industry experienced a 28% decline in the number of internet of things-related patent applications in Q3 2022 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of internet of things-related grants dropped by 17% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Internet of Things in Medical Devices – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.
Notably, the number of internet of things-related patent applications in the medical industry was 881 in Q3 2022, versus 1,224 in the prior quarter.
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Magic Leap filed the most internet of things patents within the medical industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 33 internet of things-related patents in the quarter, compared with 3 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Samsung Group with 20 internet of things patent filings, Huawei Investment & Holding (10 filings), and DexCom (8 filings) in Q3 2022.
The largest share of internet of things related patent filings in the medical industry in Q3 2022 was in the US with 41%, followed by China (6%) and South Korea (4%). The share represented by the US was 4% higher than the 37% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
