The top five companies accounted for 22% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Johnson & Johnson filed the most metaverse patents within the medical industry in Q3 2023. The company filed 28 metaverse-related patents in the quarter, compared with 36 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Intuitive Surgical with 10 metaverse patent filings, Medtronic (10 filings), and Magic Leap (10 filings) in Q3 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 41% share of total patent filings
The largest share of metaverse related patent filings in the medical industry in Q3 2023 was in the US with 41%, followed by China (10%) and South Korea (7%). The share represented by the US was 4% higher than the 37% share it accounted for in Q2 2023.
