The top five companies accounted for 21% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Johnson & Johnson filed the most metaverse patents within the medical industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 25 metaverse-related patents in the quarter, compared with 32 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Abbott Laboratories with 19 metaverse patent filings, Medtronic (15 filings), and Koninklijke Philips (10 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 41% share of total patent filings
The largest share of metaverse related patent filings in the medical industry in Q1 2024 was in the US with 41%, followed by China (8%) and Japan (4%). The share represented by the US was 5% higher than the 36% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
