Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the medical industry was 126 in Q1 2023, versus 190 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 25% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Johnson & Johnson filed the most robotics patents within the medical industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 10 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 9 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Intuitive Surgical with 8 robotics patent filings, CMR Surgical (7 filings), and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (4 filings) in Q1 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 19% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the medical industry in Q1 2023 was in China with 19%, followed by Japan (10%) and South Korea (10%). The share represented by China was 13% lower than the 32% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
