The top five companies accounted for 19% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Johnson & Johnson filed the most robotics patents within the medical industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 17 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 24 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Medtronic with 12 robotics patent filings, Intuitive Surgical (11 filings), and Stryker (7 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 41% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the medical industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 41%, followed by China (12%) and Australia (2%). The share represented by the US was 16% higher than the 26% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
