Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the medical industry was 156 in Q2 2023, versus 242 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 34% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that CMR Surgical filed the most robotics patents within the medical industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 21 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 14 in the previous quarter. It was followed by johnson & johnson with 15 robotics patent filings, Stryker (6 filings), and Intuitive Surgical (6 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 60% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the medical industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 60%, followed by China (6%) and the UK (5%). The share represented by the US was 12% higher than the 48% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
