Sapiens Steering Brain Stimulation has received a €3.5m (£3m) award from Wellcome Trust to develop next-generation deep-brain stimulation technology.
Additionally, Sapiens has secured €6.5m (£5.6m) of funding from the Michael J Fox Foundation and Agentschap NL.
Deep-brain stimulation therapy delivers electronical pulses to a small region in the brainto treat degenerative brain disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
The company will use the grants to develop a high-resolution probe that can be designed to deliver the stimulation signals from the probe towards specific brain regions, a technique known as steering brain stimulation.
Sapiens chief technology officer Michel Decré said combining Sapiens high-resolution, thin-film probe with image-based planning and programming software will help improve the therapeutic outcome of deep-brain stimulation.
