The Novartis eye care division Alcon is set to develop a new digital health platform called SMART Suite focused on improving end-to-end care for cataract patients.
The new open ecosystem will be built on the Philips HealthSuite platform featuring medical Cloud capabilities.
Intended to simplify cataract surgery, SMART Suite by Alcon will be designed to connect various diagnostic and surgical devices via a Cloud-enabled infrastructure.
The Alcon digital health platform can be integrated with Alcon’s existing cataract diagnostic equipment, electronic medical record (EMR) systems and technologies in the Cataract Refractive Suite.
It is expected that this will enable easy access to the vital diagnostic data of patients throughout the cataract procedure, which should make the clinical process simple and consistent.
Eye care professionals will also be able to leverage this Cloud-based data for analysing and optimising surgical procedures, as well as to improve patient outcomes.

Novartis noted that Philips HealthSuite platform’s identity and access management capabilities will allow protection of the health data privacy, along with patient and clinician access to the data.
