Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has globally launched its Shockwave C2 Aero coronary IVL catheter, developed to improve deliverability, lesion crossing, and repositioning for the treatment of calcified coronary artery disease (CAD).

This next-generation device builds on the established mechanism and safety record of previous Shockwave IVL catheters and adds to the company’s IVL portfolio.

CAD is characterised by a progressive accumulation of cholesterol in blood vessels. This build-up can harden into calcium deposits that hinder blood flow and complicate treatment, particularly when arteries are severely calcified or tortuous.

The Shockwave C2 Aero is designed to streamline treatment strategies by improving flexibility for physicians.

The flexible shaft, balloon, and marker bands of the catheter aim to enhance deliverability through tight arteries. Its tapered tip and new hydrophilic coating help ease the crossing of dense, calcified deposits.

A new balloon material enables more compact deflation, allowing repositioning within the coronary anatomy to access additional lesions.

Measuring 138cm in working length, the catheter includes two emitters within an integrated balloon capable of firing up to 120 pulses, delivering a combined total of up to 240 Shockwaves.

Each pulse generates ultrasonic acoustic pressure waves that penetrate soft tissue and target hardened calcium, aiding in re-establishing blood flow within blocked arteries.

J&J MedTech, Shockwave Medical president Isaac Zacharias said: “We’re redefining standards for coronary IVL with more efficient and predictable overall procedures in challenging cases when it matters most.

“As others prepare to enter the coronary IVL market, Johnson & Johnson is raising the bar with our fifth-generation platform built on years of physician feedback, sustained R&D advancements and robust clinical validation of our unique mechanism of action that reinforces our IVL leadership.”

Shockwave C2 Aero is available in Japan and the US and will soon be launched in Canada and Europe.

Last month, J&J received European CE mark approval for the ETHICON 4000 Stapler, which offers staple line integrity across diverse tissue thicknesses.
