Versiti’s division BloodCentre of Wisconsin’s Diagnostic Laboratories has introduced seven new haematology genetics test panels for various non-malignant haematology disorders such as platelet function disorders, inherited thrombocytopenia and congenital neutropenias.

Versiti’s division BloodCentre of Wisconsin's Diagnostic Laboratories has introduced seven new haematology genetics test panels for various non-malignant haematology disorders such as platelet function disorders, inherited thrombocytopenia and congenital neutropenias.

The combination of functional and genetic testing is expected to allow diagnosis of complex haematology conditions and enable a personalised review of patients to enhance care and outcomes.

Medical College of Wisconsin clinical haematologist Patrick Foy said: “Genetic testing allows us to go a step further so we can identify diseases as an individual process in a way that is more advanced than functional testing.

“It allows us to begin an era of personalised medicine when we see that lab results are different among family members, even if the functional assays are the same.”

BloodCenter of Wisconsin’s haematology genetics service team is said to support test utilisation management of genetic testing technology.

"Genetic testing allows us to go a step further so we can identify diseases as an individual process in a way that is more advanced than functional testing."

The team includes molecular pathologists, scientists, practicing clinicians, genetic counsellors, and laboratorians who work towards understanding health history, family history and laboratory phenotype of each patient for a personalised approach.

The centre focuses on blood services, esoteric diagnostic testing, organ, tissue and stem cell donation, medical services and research, while it’s Diagnostic Laboratories deliver patient care with better insights into treatment options.

The laboratories also collaborate with other organisations and industry partners to develop new diagnostic testing and treatment options.

Versiti is an organisation of various healthcare firms formed to provide solutions for transfusion medicine, transplantation, stem cell and cellular therapies, haematology, oncology and genomics.
