US-based CoorsTek Medical has acquired Italian medical device manufacturer Nanosurfaces Industries (NSI).

The deal is expected to bring long-established European operations, key capabilities and manufacturing contracts to support the former’s expansion.

NSI was the manufacturing division of SAMO, one of Europe’s orthopaedic original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

CoorsTek Medical will add newly restructured SAMO and SAMO Italia to the roster of medical device OEMs it manufactures for.

Following a brief transition period, the NSI name will be retired and the Bologna operations will fully adopt the CoorsTek Medical brand.

“The new CoorsTek Medical entity established a strong presence in Europe with a 25,000ft² facility in Bologna, which manufactures orthopaedic and dental implants and related instruments.”

Additional synergies with CoorsTek Medical will include the expansion of its manufacturing competencies through Bologna’s surface modification technology capabilities such as type I and II anodisation.

CoorsTek Medical CEO Jonathan Coors said: “CoorsTek is a widely known and well respected brand in Europe, providing strong support for CoorsTek Medical’s expansion in the European medical device sector.

“CoorsTek Medical’s acquisition of NSI gives us direct access to a large and growing European medical device marketplace in addition to increasing CoorsTek Medical’s manufacturing capacity, expertise, and capabilities.
