EMX Advanced Technologies (EMXAT) has completed the development of its Real-Time Laser Spectroscopy (RTLS) range of Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) driven devices meant for the non-invasive detection of diseases in early-stages.
The devices can also detect the homeland safety and hospital environmental monitoring applications in the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOC's).
Based on internal testing, the firm claimed that their commercially viable laser can be operated in the mid-IR spectrum at room temperature.
EMXAT co-founder James Herrmann said: "We believe that achieving this major milestone increases our confidence in bringing the company's RTLS detection device to commercial reality as these novel advancements will form the core of the company's RTLS device that would enable a more accessible and less expensive detection method versus currently available diagnostic tests."
The identification of VOC's is necessary for the detection of certain cancers, hospital acquired infections and the presence of explosives.
It is expected that the QCL component of the devices will allow measurement of diagnostic amounts of VOC's non-invasively in life-threatening malignant and infectious diseases.
The firm intends to use the devices additionally for commercial purposes, including environmental monitoring for contaminants such as E. Coli and MRSA and industrial monitoring for unseen chemicals such as methane and cyanide.
They can also be utilised for detection of drugs, explosives and bioterrorism as well as non-intrusive monitoring for high security events and animal health monitoring.
