Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon Endo-Surgery has launched its Harmonic Ace+7 Shears with advanced hemostasis, an ultrasonic surgical device indicated to seal vessels up to 7mm.
Ethicon Endo-Surgery has designed the Harmonic Ace+7 device for use in numerous procedures and specialties that include general, colorectal, bariatric, gynecology, thoracic and urology.
The new device is best suited for cases that require dissection, mobilisation and large vessel sealing.
According to the company, Harmonic Ace+7 combines the precision and multi-functionality expected of Harmonic with reliable large vessel sealing, representing a true breakthrough in ultrasonic energy technology.
Benchtop testing showed that the Harmonic Ace+7 shears with advanced hemostasis mode demonstrated greater 5mm-7mm vessel-sealing reliability compared with LigaSure 5mm blunt tip and LigaSure advance devices.
Benchtop testing showed that the Harmonic Ace+7 device demonstrated 140% higher median burst pressure compared with LigaSure 5mm blunt tip and 112% higher median burst pressure compared with LigaSure advance device when sealing 5mm-7mm vessels in the advanced hemostasis mode.
Colorectal Surgical Associates, Houston, Texas, colon and rectal surgeon Dr Bartley Pickron said that the addition of the 7mm vessel sealing capability to the Harmonic Ace+7 Shears makes it a useful tool for laparoscopic colon surgery.
"It provides the same precise dissection that I've become accustomed to from the Harmonic Ace and now with larger vessel sealing capability," Dr Pickron said.
"For many years, surgeons have had to choose between precision and sealing strength. With the Harmonic Ace+7 Shears, we will no longer need to trade off precision and multi-functionality for sealing strength.
"Furthermore, the avoidance of using multiple instruments should result in a cost savings for the overall procedure."
