US-based Omron Healthcare has introduced an over-the-counter (OTC) Omron HEAT Pain Pro device to relieve acute muscle and joint pain.
The OTC medical device uses a combination of heat and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) technology to enhance the therapy efficacy.
The TENS technology issues stimulating pulses across the surface of the skin and along the nerve strands which block pain signals from reaching the brain.
An electrical stimulation can also lead to the release of endorphins, which act as natural painkillers.
Omron Healthcare marketing and product development director Carol Lucarelli said: “Millions of Americans suffer from daily pain.
“Whether they are experiencing back pain, aching knees, joint pain or chronic discomfort, people are looking for more safe, effective pain management options.
“Increased awareness of the potential dangers of opioids and prescription pain killers is driving more consumer interest in pain management options.
“The Omron HEAT Pain Pro is a safe, effective, accessible drug-free choice.”
The device is designed to offer 27 different combinations of heat and TENS modes with 20 different levels of intensity.
It features a pre-set therapy options applicable for a variety of conditions and locations such as lower back, arm, leg, foot, shoulders and joints.
The device, fitting in the palm of the hand, is easy to use with a large button interface and has clearly stated instructions
It can be used at home and at work at the patient’s convenience.
The Omron HEAT Pain Pro device is also a low-maintenance and cost-effective product consisting of a rechargeable battery and gel pads which can be used for up to 30 times before requiring replacement.
