Royal Philips and Medtronic have formed an alliance to develop an image-guided treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), a type of heart rhythm disorder.

Under the partnership, Philips’ KODEX-EPD dielectric imaging and navigation system, dielectric imaging sensors, clinical software and services will be leveraged to support cryoablation procedures performed using the Medtronic Arctic Front Advance cryoablation technology.

The KODEX-EPD system is intended to cut the requirement for X-ray imaging during cryoablation procedures. It comes with cryoablation specific features.

Philips EPD Solutions business leader Marlou Janssen said: “This integrated solution can guide physicians during the treatment of AF patients with ablation, as they can view detailed, CT-like 3D anatomy, reducing the need for X-ray imaging.

“Partnering with Medtronic extends the reach of our KODEX-EPD cardiac imaging and navigation system. Today, this technology is simplifying navigation, and in the future it has potential for a wide range of applications, including addressing the key unmet need of real-time therapy assessment – one of the more significant limitations of the current standard of care.”

The KODEX-EPD system utilises dielectric imaging to generate CT-like 3D, high-definition images of cardiac structures in real-time. It also features mapping capabilities and eliminates the need to reset a reference point in case the patient moves.

It offers enhanced visualisation, while simplifying navigation and improving procedure efficiency and patient care.

The device holds the European CE-Mark and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for mapping and navigation during arrhythmia ablation procedures.

In pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) cryoablation procedures, the system can be used to confirm the Medtronic Achieve Mapping Catheter positioning. It allows quick visualisation of the pulmonary veins.

Currently, Philips is also working to add balloon visualisation capabilities to the system.

Medtronic Atrial Fibrillation Solutions division vice-president and general manager Rebecca Seidel said: “When available, physicians will have the ability to use an innovative cardiac imaging and mapping system during cryoablation procedures, while also realising the significant benefits of our best-in-class cryoablation therapy.”

The integrated solution is set to be available for sale in the US and Europe in the fourth quarter of this year. As part of the deal, Medtronic will be responsible for product sales on behalf of Philips.
