Philips has collaborated with NVIDIA to leverage advanced AI technology for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Through this alliance, the two companies are set to create a foundational model for MRI, powered by Nvidia’s AI computing platform.

The model will be a large deep learning neural network trained on vast datasets. It will serve as the basis for a new generation of applications designed to significantly improve MR image quality, expedite scan times and refine diagnostic workflow and precision across various clinical applications.

It is said to allow for zero-click scan planning for various anatomies, potentially speeding up workflows and increasing throughput.

Philips noted that interactive image enhancement offerings such as super-resolution, denoising and sharpening will facilitate accurate diagnoses.

Radiologists will have the opportunity to preview and adjust image quality and speed settings before the actual scan, contributing to a reliable diagnostic process.

Furthermore, the model is expected to support the detection and interpretation of image findings automatically.

The partnership aims to generate a solution that integrates into current MR workflows.

Philips aims to build upon Nvidia’s interactive foundation model for 3D medical imaging and VISTA-3D, as well as MAISI, a 3D model tailored to generate quality synthetic images with or without anatomical annotations.

These technologies are said to generate domain-specific solutions designed to address the specific challenges of MR imaging.

Philips MRI business leader Dr Ioannis Panagiotelis said: “Our AI-powered MRI solutions are already enabling healthcare providers to deliver better care to more people.

“By partnering with Nvidia to build an MR Foundational Model, we’re pioneering a new frontier for medical imaging, one that has the potential to transform the role of MR in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases. The benefits for patients and healthcare providers could be enormous.”

In February, Philips secured the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) certificate for its vendor-agnostic Radiology Operations Command Center Console.

This imaging solution enhances diagnostic imaging accessibility in Europe by enabling radiologists to assist technologists in real-time and remotely control scans to ensure quality images.
