Philips’ next-generation BlueSeal 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system will be unveiled at the 2024 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting, taking place in Chicago, US, from 1 to 4 December.

The new system features a 70cm wide-bore design and integrates Philips’ AI-enabled MR Smart Workflow solutions, which are intended to enhance access and diagnostic confidence for improved patient outcomes.

Smart Workflow solutions for the system include SmartExam, which Philips says can automate MRI exam planning, scanning, and processing for up to 80% of procedures; SmartQuant, for the generation of AI-enhanced MR images for anatomies including brain, liver, and heart; and SmartSpeed, which Philips says offers up to 65% higher image resolution without added scan time.

According to Philips, the solutions will increase daily patient throughput without compromising diagnostic quality to meet the requirements of high-demand healthcare environments.

Philips stated that a key differentiator of BlueSeal is the system’s Smart Reading technology. The cloud-based AI toolset, which integrates imaging and reading on the system, will account for neurological indications such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), and prostate cancer – developed in partnership with Belgium-based diagnostics company icometrix and Spain-based imaging biomarker specialist Quibim respectively – for the provision of automated AI-based quantitative reports.

With helium-free operating ability, Philips claims that BlueSeal MRI will become the lightest 1.5T 70cm MRI system available today, making it up to 1,700kg lighter than conventional 1.5T zero boil-off systems currently available in the industry.

Without the need for a vent pipe, Philips added that BlueSeal can be installed more flexibly in new locations, including on elevated floors or indoor sites with construction limitations.

Philips’ global business leader of MRI Ioannis Panagiotelis commented: “With AI applications seamlessly integrated into our latest 1.5T BlueSeal scanner, we have now applied AI to every aspect of the MRI workflow – from patient set-up and high-resolution image capture to quantitative data extraction, advanced diagnostics, and reporting.

“With this latest innovation, we continue our commitment to deliver wider access to quality MRI to more patients across multiple settings.”

According to GlobalData analysis, the global 1.5T MRI systems market was valued at around $3.1bn in 2023 and is forecast to reach a valuation of around $6.5bn by 2033.

Other companies set to showcase innovations at RSNA 2024 include Laurel Bridge Software with its newest generation of secure cross-enterprise workflow orchestration, image sharing and AI enablement tools, and United Imaging on the world’s first installation of uMI Panvivo, its positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) platform, at Pueblo Medical Imaging in Nevada, US.
