Medical device and hospital equipment provider SageTech Medical signed a distribution agreement with global hospital equipment group Dräger UK, with €3bn in annual sales and connections to the NHS supply chain.

SageTech provides an anaesthetic gas capture machine, known as SID-Dock, a UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marked, Class I medical device for the safe and sustainable capture of volatile anaesthetic gases.

The company has a focus on environmental issues in the medical space and aims to offset 2% of NHS carbon emissions each year.

The NHS currently contributes to 5.4% of the UK’s national greenhouse gas emissions.

The deal with Dräger UK will give its NHS customers access to the SID-Dock and will present future opportunities for SageTech to break into international markets with its sustainable solution.

Commenting on the commercial milestones reached, SageTech CEO Dr Iain Menneer said: “Our agreement with Dräger makes it easier for our mutual NHS customers to gain access to our innovative gas capture technology and accelerates our mission to help healthcare providers prevent the significant pollution caused from the use of vital anaesthetic gases.”

The SID-Dock was recently bought by the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK, to capture waste gas. The trust’s adoption of the technology highlights the growing recognition and importance of sustainable practices within the healthcare industry. Following this validation, the medical device company predicts more trusts to follow suit.

Multiple regulations in the medical device industry have slowed environmental sustainability efforts. But as climate change becomes more prominent on the social agenda, many companies are trying to implement change in any way they can.

SageTech released its solution in January 2023 aiming to prevent the release of millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents of waste anaesthetic into the atmosphere each year from hospitals globally.
