Japanese analytical instrumentation company Shimadzu Corporation has teamed up with US-based artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics expert Shyld to spearhead an AI-enhanced ultraviolet irradiation C (UV-C) disinfection technology.

The technology combines Shimadzu’s optics and Shyld’s AI innovations and aims to redefine the infection control landscape.

Stanford Medical Centre in California, US, has installed the Shyld AI disinfection technology in patient rooms to automatically detect risks in real time and use UV-C light to kill pathogens on multiple surfaces.

UV-C is emerging as an effective strategy for microbial control in indoor public spaces. It is commonly used for air, surface, and water disinfection and is not considered harmful to human health, making it safe for occupied spaces yet still effective for disinfection purposes.

The technology became more popular during the Covid-19 pandemic when an increase in UV-C-based technology devices appeared in the market with levels of pathogen reduction higher than 99.9%.

The new technology will be showcased at the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) 2023 conference, scheduled 26-28 June in Orlando, and Manufacturing World in Tokyo on 21-23 June.
