The European Union has granted CE mark certification to Smiths Medical’s passive safety device, designed to help protect clinicians and healthcare workers from unintended needlesticks.

The passive Jelco IntuitIV Safety IV catheter features a guide needle with a cylindrical tip protector, designed to help prevent the sharp point from coming in contact with the caregiver, a bystander or a hospital staffer.

In addition, the safety device includes a length of tubing and an access port through which fluid or medication is delivered to a patient’s bloodstream.

Conventional IV catheters lack the safety features of shielding or encapsulating, thus leaving the blood-covered needle exposed, while the Safety IV catheter automatically encapsulates the guide needle tip upon removing from the patient’s blood vessel.

Among clinicians and healthcare workers, accidental needlesticks with “sharps” occur frequently, at an estimated rate of 3.5 million incidents per year worldwide, according to the company.

Smiths Medical president Srini Seshadri said the company’s goal is to help make every medical intervention successful for the patient as well as the caregiver.
