Monteris Medical and Symphony Robotics have entered a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing precision in laser ablation procedures for complex brain tumours.

Under the partnership, Monteris will integrate its laser energy delivery system with Symphony’s AI-driven micro-robotic technology.

This collaboration will potentially improve the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided neurosurgical practices.

Symphony Robotics has developed an innovative micro-robotic arm that operates within an MRI bore without the need for an engine.

It can navigate intricate brain structures through a 5mm opening, allowing for non-linear laser probe trajectories and real-time motion planning guided by MRI.

Symphony’s technology is expected to enhance the precision of laser ablation.

It is also particularly beneficial for challenging lesions related to conditions such as neurofibromatosis and glioblastoma, as well as targets associated with epilepsy.

Symphony Robotics founder and CEO Mordechai Avisar said: “This partnership underscores our mission to redefine what is possible in brain surgery.

“By integrating AI, micro-robotics and real-time imaging, we are transforming the entire approach to treating brain disorders, not merely adding new surgical tools.

“We are excited about this partnership and its potential to accelerate development, market launch and commercialisation, building on Monteris’ expertise, manufacturing capabilities and leadership in the field.”

The collaboration aims to provide surgeons with enhanced flexibility in anatomically complex regions, extending the outcomes of Monteris’ NeuroBlate technology.

In May last year, Monteris announced the commercial release of its NeuroBlate NB3 FullFire 1.6mm laser probe, a laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) platform that incorporates robotic control.

Monteris Medical president and CEO Martin Emerson said: “At Monteris, we have led the way in LITT innovation, including NeuroBlate’s own robotic platform.

“Partnering with Symphony Robotics allows us to combine our expertise in LITT with Symphony’s breakthrough in microsurgical robotics. Together, we are redefining what is possible in precision neurosurgery.”
